Mordecai Cohen Ettinger, MA, is the author of the forthcoming book, We All Hold Up the Sky: Lessons in Health Justice for the 21st Century. He has over 20 years experience as a social justice change maker, scholar, educator, and holistic healer. He serves as adjunct faculty at the California Institute of Integral Studies where he teaches Science and Technology Studies. His academic research focuses on the neurobiology of the social nervous system, and its implications with regard to collective trauma, healing, transformational leadership and social change.  Trained in Somatic Experiencing, Reiki, and Cranial Sacral therapy, he has studied with Dr. Peter Levine, biophysicist and creator of Somatic Experiencing and Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, the trauma expert and the only psychiatrist to be invited to participate in South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission.  Mordecai holds a BA from McGill University in Montreal and earned his Masters degree in Ecology.

Along with his work as a scholar and healer, Mordecai has worked with ground-breaking non-profits and community-based organizations as a Board member, staff member, and consultant since the late 90s.   He co-founded the Transgender, Gender Variant, Intersex Justice Project (TGI Justice Project) in 2004.  Mordecai served as the Interim Executive Director of Caduceus Outreach Services, a community mental health organization providing direct services and advocacy for dually diagnosed homeless people and the Interim Co-Director of Justice Now, a human rights and health justice organization which focuses on women in prison. 

Some of the other organizations with which Mordecai has had the gift of working include InterAct, an international organization which advocates for the human and civil rights of intersex children and youth, formerly Advocates for Informed Choice (AIC), The Arab Resource and Organizing Center, Sins Invalid, Community United Against Violence (CUAV) the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, People’s Durham, and San Francisco Women Against Rape.  

Mordecai’s range of organizational expertise encompasses facilitating leadership transitions and coordinating culture change.  He also has over 20 years experience providing fundraising, fiscal consultation and training to enhance organization-wide competency and ensure organizational fiscal health and sustainability.  Finally, Mordecai offers meeting facilitation and mediation services, hiring and human resource support, board management and development services and tailored organizational development curriculum.  

Mordecai applies his two decades of inter-disciplinary study of the processes of change and what makes it possible along with the knowledge he’s gained in the social justice field to his work with individuals.  He helps individual clients identify the kind of change that want to make in their lives and make it happen by supporting them to master the art and science of transformation.  Using a synthesis of individually tailored education on the neurobiology of healing, somatics, energy medicine, contemplative and meditation techniques and body work Mordecai enables his clients to be the change they most want to see in the world….
